Assam: Train Mows Down Truck,
Driver In Golaghat District
A truck driver was mowed down by the Avadh
Assam Express in Tamuly village of Borpathar in Golaghat district when he tried
to cross a railway track without any gate.
GOLAGHAT: In an unfortunate incident, a truck was hit and its driver killed by a fast-moving train at a railway crossing in Golaghat district of Assam on Monday. The deceased truck driver's identity is yet to be ascertained. The train is known to be the south bound Avadh-Assam Express. It has come to light that the railway crossing was an exposed one with no gates to stop entry of vehicles when a train is passing by.
In the incident, the truck
driver died on the spot. However, his identity is yet to be known. Talking to
the media, the locals allege that in spite of many applications submitted to
the concerned authorities, a gate at the crossing has not been installed up
till now, which has posed great danger to their lives.
Now, this is not the first time that the
absence of rail gate at a crossing has led to a tragic incident. In the entire
state, there remain many exposed railway tracks that have turned into nothing
but death traps for locals and commuters passing through such crossings. If
urgent steps are not taken by a coordination between the railways and the local
authorities, many more unfortunate accidents may happen leading to loss of
lives and property.
Earlier in September this
year, a class 11 student was hit by a fast moving Intercity Express in Tinsukia
district when he crossed the tracks to get hold of something on the other side
of the road. The victim was identified as Tanmoy Sharma. In another incident,
three persons of a family died after train rammed into their four wheeler
earlier in the month of July. The incident happened at Puranigudam Bikhoyachuk
in Nagaon district when the family which was travelling to Silghat from
Guwahati. All three died on the spot.
